Do You Have Diamonds In Your Closet Too?

Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of people cleaning out their homes in my neighborhood. I live in an “active adult” community, gated, and very nice. But, there have been quite a few homes just around the blocks where I walk my dogs, that are now empty and for sale.

Family members suddenly appear, clean out the contents of the home, occasionally have an estate sale and the rest is left on the curb for whoever wants it, before the bulk pickup truck appears. Some of what once graced a comfortable home has been regulated to plastic bins and file boxes visible from the garage.

Many of these people have been here for 30 years or more, and grew old living in their homes. Then, when their homes go up for sale, someone “young”, 55 to 60 years old, comes in and transforms the house. But, before that happens, family has to come in and clean out a life. I see it all the time.

A collection of old home stuff on the lawn

It all looks the same to me. A little bit of this, a lot of that. Piles of books, couches, televisions, Christmas decor, curtains, pillows, rugs, end tables, mattresses, knick-knacks, garden gnomes, porch chairs. Basically, lots of the same stuff. Variations on a theme.

The theme of life.

About two months ago, my older grand daughter Julia went to school one day and announced to her teachers that “Daddy put diamonds in the closet”. Can you imagine, diamonds in your closet!

Well, what he actually put in the closet were two coat hooks that you can stick on the door after peeling the sticky backing off of them. My son put these two hangers down low, so both girls can easily hang up their coats. The shape of these coat hangers are diamonds!

So, my 4-yr-old grand daughter goes to school and tells her teachers, “Daddy put diamonds in the closet!”

Leave it to a four-year-old imagination!

How’s your imagination these days?

A little dulled, perhaps? Maybe feeling uninspired or “eh”. Is it due to the dog days of August, or maybe because summer is hot and humid, and your brain feels scorched? Or maybe because nothing is new.

That’s it! Nothing is new. Everything is the same. Routine, mundane, everyday. Which leaves you feeling like you’re running on empty, out of gas, sputtering to a stop. Which in turn leads to a self-centered outlook. Not good.

Cloister Space

Yet, there are ways to get your creative juices flowing again. They are easier than you think. Here are a few ideas:

  • Believe in yourself, first of all!
  • Go for a walk.
  • Keep a journal.
  • Find a favorite place to sit and reflect.
  • Make note of your dreams.
  • Take a trip, however short, out of town now and then.
  • Create a Sacred Space just for you. Go there often.

Do you have diamonds in your closet too?

Diamond design that says "shine bright"

Doing these things will help you find your diamonds, will suddenly light up an idea that has long been there, only waiting for a little different approach from you. A path to spark your ingenuity. Something that will light you up, just like diamonds!

Because no one wants to leave this world without being inspired, without doing what they were meant to do, without knowing their life’s work has been fulfilled. It doesn’t always work out that way, but you want more, so much more, than those bins and boxes of a spent life.

Never fear that feeling out of sync or in a funk, as they used to say, will last for long. There is too much goodness in your life that is just waiting to spill out! Kind of like opening the door to the closet and finding diamonds! Just ask Julia!  ♥
