Soft yarn in four pastel colors

Adventures in Yarn Farming A Book Review

Have you ever bought yarn from a craft fair or specialty website? Or browsed through a beautiful yarn shop trying (in vain) to make up your mind about which colorful yarn to take home?! Adventures in Yarn Farming a Book Review can take you there.

Where did that yarn come from?

Skeins of yarn in different colors and textures

Have you ever wondered how the yarn you see in stores gets there? I mean, yarn comes from somewhere.

All the colors and all the fibers; it is a cornucopia of yarntopia (that rhymes!) all over the place. Especially in real yarn shops, as opposed to those big box store shelves. It’s just not the same thing! As you wander from mohair to silk to wool yarn, do you ever think about where those colorful skeins come from? You could call it from “yarn farming.”

And now here is the perfect book; one which gives you a sheep’s-eye view of just what it takes to get all that fleece from sheep to skein. Through the lazy course of a year, you’ll be right alongside Barbara Parry, who with her husband Mike, live on a 220-acre farm in the western Massachusetts town of Shelburne. But, there’s nothing lazy about all of the work that goes into finally getting all that wool produced.

Have I found the book for you!

It’s just perfect because it takes you through an entire year with a flock of sheep and how yarn goes from sheep-to-skein, so to speak. The book is entitled is “Adventures in Yarn Farming: Four Seasons on a New England Fiber Farm” by Barbara Parry.
If you’ve never had an interest in yarn before, this book will change your mind forever! The author, Barbara Parry, invites all of us in to her western Massachusetts farm where we get to walk alongside her as she works through her days. I love books like these! Read how Barbara’s flock started with just two sheep and how it has involved into the delightful gathering she has today. Season by season we go, starting in the Spring where “from shearing to awaiting new lambs to making hay to lamb weaning to the final steps in the making of yarn.” (Courtesy of Booklist.)

In addition to seeing firsthand how Ms. Parry produces yarn for all of the rest of us, she also includes patterns for knitting sweaters and accessories. As you read through, you will be drawn in; learning everything there is to know about what it takes to work a fiber farm every day. The accompanying pictures are sumptuous; big, glorious full color photos that will have you inspired from cover to cover.

Everybody loves the pictures and the patterns, and so will you!

I can’t wait to try out one of the beautiful patterns. You’ll find the most beautiful SCARF pattern right on page 215, too!

Don’t believe me? Take a look at what all the reviewers have to say right here. Rave reviews say it all! I have this book, refer to it often, and love deciding which pattern I’m knitting next! And if you want to learn just what it takes to understand yarn processes, you’ll order your copy of “Adventures in Yarn Farming,” too! You’ll never look at yarn the same way again.

You know I only recommend knitting products that I own or try, and this book is a MUST-HAVE!

There are lots of knitting books out there, and if you’re wondering which one to buy next, then let it be “Adventures in Yarn Farming“. There are projects for knitting, spinning, dyeing and weaving.
