Candles in The Windows

Summer is waning. So nice for knitting! I have a number of knitting projects picked out for the next couple of months, and I’ve been busy on these. A ‘heart afghan’ is one of them, and a baby blanket for my daughter-in-laws co-worker is another. Then, my grand daughters will be needing winter things!

As the days grow shorter, there are things you can do to bring the cozy inside.

One of the things that just makes a house a home are candles in the windows. In fact I talk about this very thing in a book I wrote about six years ago, entitled “Candle Reflections . . . An Illuminated Life” which you can buy at Amazon.  Candles in the windows are one of my favorite things.  😉

Have you ever driven past a house with candles in the windows? It’s enchanting for sure. Nothing speaks to me more than seeing pretty houses and those illusive candles which shine so bright.

Knitting seems to inspire beauty. It must be because we are creating things out of nothing; our own designs or those of another which WE are knitting. Where once there was nothing, now there is a beautiful blanket, or a colorful sweater or a fabulous scarf. When you take the time to actually knit these things, when you could run to a store, or  to a mall and buy them in one short visit, then you must love beauty.

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever: its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness.” John Keats

Candles in the windows are some of my favorite things

A beautiful autumn golden landscape a lot like candles in the windows.

Autumn certainly has its moments; the quiet days broken only by the cool breezes as they blow, the sound of crickets, and the silent changing of the leaves.  Inside everything is warm and comfortable; here, too, I have candles in all my most important rooms. Places that I spend most time during the day; places where they can be single little beacons of light no matter the hour of the day or night.

A lot like my knitting. Come to my home and you’ll see it everywhere. Afghans, placemats, dishcloths, oven hangers, scarves, sweaters, curtains, table runners, coasters, and on and on. These knitted things make up my home, simple as they may be. Even my knitted snowman sits contentedly with his ceramic cousins during the colder months.

As we go through life, we should make it a point to adorn it with the things we love. It’s so important, it really is! After all, it’s mostly for our sanity. Life comes with so many ups and downs; a day can start out so nice and end in difficulties. We know . . .  we’ve all been there.

So, when the days of lounging on the beach are gone, and you need a heavy sweater just to venture out-of-doors, take heart! There are seasons for everything; and we are turning to seasons other than sand and surf.

So hold on to the good things you have and add to them when you can. Music, art, children, pets, books, the “savory’s” of this life, I call them.

Create, build, endorse, and create again.

That’s the SECRET to simply living. Do small things with great meaning!

And in quiet days and noisy times, we can always count on what’s important. For me, knitting  has a special place; a very special place. So, the next time someone changes up their candles I won’t mind too much. Like I said, seasons come, and seasons go. Because in my mind’s eye, I will still be seeing them. Along with my knitting. There I can say are my candles in the windows.
